Over 122 Million Displaced – Aid Cuts Put Refugee Children at Extreme Risk

As the world marks World Refugee Day today, the statistics are more sobering than ever: over 122 million people have been forcibly displaced due to war, climate disaster, and persecution — the highest number in recorded history.

Yet at this critical moment, global aid for refugees is shrinking.

Cuts When Help Is Most Needed

International charities and UN agencies warn that funding shortages are leaving millions without food, clean water, education, or shelter. In some refugee camps, rations have been halved. Schools have shuttered. Families face impossible choices—early marriage, forced labour, child trafficking.

In South Sudan, 97% of displaced families reported going entire days without eating. In Kenya’s Kakuma camp, children are receiving barely enough to survive. The warning signs are everywhere, but the funding isn’t.

“These are brutal cuts at a brutal time,” said one UN official. “And children are paying the price.”

Why Is This Happening?

Countries like the UK and US have reduced their overseas aid budgets significantly. More funds are being directed to domestic pressures and defence spending, even as crises in Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, and the Sahel escalate.

As a result:

  • UNHCR, WFP, and other frontline agencies are laying off staff.
  • Aid is being slashed by 30–60% in some regions.
  • Humanitarian infrastructure is at breaking point.

The Children Most at Risk

Aid cuts hit children hardest:

  • No food = severe malnutrition.
  • No school = lost futures.
  • No safety = increased risk of trafficking, abuse, and child marriage.

“We’re watching a generation’s potential vanish before our eyes,” says David Miliband, CEO of the International Rescue Committee.
