About Foundation Of Light

The Foundation of Light, established in 2001 by former Sunderland AFC chairman Sir Bob Murray CBE, is the official charity of Sunderland AFC. Its mission is to harness the power of football to address significant societal challenges in the North East of England, aiming to help communities lead happier and healthier lives. Operating from the Beacon of Light in Sunderland, the Foundation also has outreach centres across the city, South Tyneside, and County Durham. Over the past two decades, it has been instrumental in tackling issues such as social isolation, unemployment, food poverty, and poor physical and mental health. Notably, for every £1 invested in its work, the Foundation saves the public purse £39.
