Prince Harry Makes Unpublicised Donation to Nottingham Charity

Prince Harry has made an unannounced and significant donation to Himmah, a Nottingham-based charity tackling food poverty, social exclusion, and racism. The contribution, while undisclosed in value, will directly fund over 650 emergency food parcels for families across the city.

Himmah, which operates food banks, a community kitchen, and various outreach programmes, described the gesture as both surprising and highly impactful. The donation comes at a time when demand for support has risen sharply due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

A Longstanding Link to Nottingham

The Duke of Sussex also sent a letter alongside the donation, explaining his continued interest in Nottingham:

“Nottingham holds a special place in my heart, having had the privilege of visiting and supporting the community there for over a decade.”

Prince Harry has long-standing ties to the city. During his time as a working royal, he supported several Nottingham-based initiatives, including the Full Effect programme, which focused on youth development and crime prevention. His work in the area began in 2013 and continued for several years, forming part of his broader engagement with underserved UK communities.

Himmah’s Response

Sajid Mohammed, director of Himmah, said the team was “completely gobsmacked” by the donation. While the charity previously received a £10,000 donation from Meghan Markle in 2020, this marks the first direct contribution from Prince Harry himself.

“To have been chosen by such a high-profile royal once is amazing,” said Mohammed. “To have been supported by Prince Harry too left us hugely humbled.”

Himmah currently provides over 1,300 food parcels per month and serves around 1,200 hot meals through its community kitchen. The donation will help the organisation sustain and expand these services amid rising local need.

Quiet Support, Tangible Outcomes

Unlike many charitable donations associated with high-profile figures, this contribution was made privately and without any public announcement from the Duke or his office. It only came to light through Himmah’s response and press coverage.

This reflects a pattern seen in several of Prince Harry’s recent charitable activities — prioritising direct support over publicity. While no longer carrying out official royal duties, he continues to engage with UK-based causes, particularly those he has supported in the past.

The Sussexes’ non-profit, The Archewell Foundation, has focused on similar themes — mental health, food security, racial justice — with donations typically going to small- to mid-sized organisations delivering on-the-ground support.

Context and Timing

The donation comes as food bank usage across the UK reaches record highs. According to recent data from the Trussell Trust, more than 3.1 million emergency food parcels were distributed in 2023–24 — a 94% increase from five years ago.

Nottingham has not been exempt. Rising household costs and cuts to local services have placed further pressure on community organisations like Himmah, which rely heavily on donations and volunteer support to operate.

A Consistent Commitment

While Prince Harry’s public role in the UK has shifted significantly in recent years, this donation suggests a continued commitment to the communities he connected with during his time as a senior royal. It also shows a preference for engaging in targeted, practical support — particularly in areas that face ongoing economic and social inequality.
